Well, the autumn season is here. While leaves may begin to fall and temperatures slightly decline, Lisbon in november still remains bright and beautiful. In fact, it’s perfect for an autumnal city break. Very much so that the city is No. 1 in Conde Nast Traveller’s Best Holiday Destinations in November.
Compared to the rest of Europe, Lisbon weather is enviably warm this month, with an average of 18˚c. It’s sunny but cool and fresh, as you wrap up with your fashionable coats and scarves, strolling around the city’s world-renowned waterfront promenades, smelling the roasted chestnuts in the air, and enjoying the sunshine.
This season also means the evenings are longer, and there will be sporadic rain. Therefore you can spend more time indoors. See the latest exhibitions, enjoy events and indulge in music and films. The world’s biggest entrepreneurial and technology conference sustains its annual momentum in Lisbon, taking place between 4 to 7 November this year. All of the world’s successful and promising digital gurus, start-ups and businesses all converge in Web Summit city to share, discuss, innovate and enmesh ideas, making Lisbon a real entrepreneurial hub on the planet. This means plenty of events, talks, symposiums and exhibitions spread throughout the city. Bars will be thriving on sunsets (see our Best Terraces & Esplanades in Lisbon) and nightlife will surely be buzzing (we featured The Best Rooftop Bars in Lx).

For lovers of architecture, art and design, Lisbon in november is the perfect canvas as the Trienale de Arquitectura de Lisboa takes place across venues around the city. This year’s edition is themed “The Poetics of Reason”, creating a platform where architectural concepts intersects with philosophy, as well as rationality. You can admire five exhibitions in different prominent spaces, from natural to physical, from historical to contemporary ideas. Its mission is to raise awareness and stimulate thinking as we perceive our urban structures and the way we interact with them.

As in november Lisbon’s temperature drops a few notches, the chilly weather spells the best time to spend evenings in the cinema. So what’s better than to see the films playing at this year’s Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival. The 13th edition is a packed house, bringing together works of film art from all over the world. Latest works from Terrence Malick, Robert Eggers, François Ozon are all playing in the festival, and there retrospectives dedicated to Christian Petzold and Alice Rohrwacher, to name a few. This is also a great opportunity to check out the best cinemas Lisbon has to offer, as well as the historic town of Sintra, as Hollywood and international stars descend into the country for a glittering twelve-day event.

World music and jazz converge in November, taking place in ten Portuguese cities, including our beloved Lisbon. For music lovers, there’s a great range of local and international artists and a diverse breadth of genre. It’s considered a unique music festival in Portugal, one that has gained character and privilege throughout the years. The 10th edition features Argentine musician Melingo, British artist Nitin Sawhney, Brazilian singer-songwriter Maria Gadú, Spanish pop singer Travis Birds, and Clint Eastwood’s musician son, Kyle Eastwood.

If you’re in the mood for opera, then you’re in for a special treat this month with the Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Baroque masterpiece Orpheus and Eurydice playing for one night only in Teatro Nacional de São Carlos. We say special because the English musical director Jane Glover is weaving the original version on stage, sung in Italian, as premiered in Vienna back in 1762. This is part of the city’s centenary celebration of the birth of Sophia de Mello Breyener Andresen, the beloved Portuguese poet.

On the last Thursday of November, Teatro Romano on the hills of Alfama, in collaboration with Museu de Lisboa, is celebrating its final Bacchus Hour of the year. This mean plenty of wine tasting, musician playing live music, as you bid farewell to the last rays of sunlight before darkness sets and the season of winter envelops the air. This is a free events, and can be enjoyed with a wonderful view of the Tagus river.

Certainly one of the biggest treats this autumn season, especially in this month of fancy dress parties, the Harry Potter Exhibition is launching in Lisbon. Fans of the series unite, as the famous movie franchise will cast a spell at the Portuguese National Pavilion in Parque das Naçoes. This will be the first time the exhibition is coming to Portugal, and thousands of authentic costumes and film props will be on display, as well the popular film sets from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, including the Great Hall, Hagrid’s Hut and the Gryffindor Common Room. Recommended for families with kids!
