At Cheese & Wine, we are proud to partner with national suppliers who prioritise authenticity and sustainability, key aspects we value deeply. One such esteemed partner is Balagué Wines, a producer renowned for its dedication to preserving the unique characteristics of Douro wines while implementing sustainable practices.
The Balagué estate has been family-owned since the 19th century, with significant contributions from family members who emigrated to Brazil. The current owner, passionate about the estate since childhood, continues the legacy, ensuring that the traditions and quality of Douro winemaking are upheld.
In 2021, Balagué began producing DOC wines, with a small but significant production of white and red wines. This step marks the beginning of a new era for the estate, combining traditional methods with modern practices.
Location and Soil
Quinta Balagué is located in the heart of the Douro region, with vineyards benefiting from the unique schist soils and a Mediterranean climate. These conditions are ideal for producing wines with intense flavors and high tannins, essential characteristics of Douro wines.
Climate Impact
The region's cold winters and hot summers contribute to the distinctiveness of Balagué wines, with higher altitudes helping to maintain the necessary acidity in the grapes.
Balagué is deeply committed to sustainable viticulture, recognising the economic challenges faced by Douro wine producers. By joining Prodouro, an association dedicated to protecting the region's viticulture, Balagué advocates for fair pricing and genuine labeling, ensuring the authenticity of Douro wines.
Balagué's red wine is distinguished by its vibrant freshness, achieved through the avoidance of traditional oak barrel aging. This approach preserves the wine's mineral quality and acidity, akin to that of a white wine, while maintaining its exuberant aromas and lively palate. Crafted as a farmhouse blend, it reflects the unique terroir of the Balagué vineyard, situated between the Távora and Torto rivers, which enhances its distinctive character and complexity.
